Carbon Neutral Fuels raises investment from leading independent British travel company

Sustainable aviation e-fuel start-up Carbon Neutral Fuels announces the successful completion of a significant funding round with leading British travel company Trailfinders.

Carbon Neutral Fuels Ltd (“CNF”), a pioneering developer of sustainable e-fuels announced on 7th October 2024 that they have successfully raised £1 million from Trailfinders, one of the UK’s leading travel companies. This investment will be pivotal in accelerating CNF’s vision of a fully sustainable travel sector, achieved through the widespread adoption of synthetic e-fuels. CNF’s proprietary process delivers fuel with an emissions saving of 90% vs traditional fossil based fuel, and can be used in existing engines without modification.

This investment will advance CNF’s concept engineering and design work for ‘ASAP-DAC’, a consortium to deliver a ‘First-of-a-Kind’ commercial-scale 25,000 tonnes per year ‘Power-to-Liquid’ Sustainable Aviation Fuel (“SAF”) facility in the UK. Part-funded by the UK Government’s Advanced Fuels Fund, this facility when fully operational in 2030 will produce enough eSAF to satisfy 40% of the UK’s legally mandated supply. Through our offtake partners in the UK and Europe, ASAP-DAC will help significantly contribute towards national and international ‘net zero by 2050’ targets.

The partnership with Trailfinders, founded in 1970 by Sir Michael Gooley CBE, marks an important step for CNF in its objective of developing innovative fuel production technologies capable of significantly reducing transport emissions. This strategic collaboration between Trailfinders and CNF underscores the shared commitment of both organisations to promoting the transition to green travel.

“Trailfinders is proud to partner with Carbon Neutral Fuels and invest in the development of this important new technology. CNF’s plan for SAF production is innovative and the prospect of producing synthetic e-fuels in the UK at a competitive price, can only help accelerate adoption.” says Sir Michael Gooley CBE, Founder and Executive Chairman of Trailfinders.

Alasdair Lumsden, Co-Founder of Carbon Neutral Fuels, said “We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with Trailfinders; we can think of nobody more highly respected or well connected within the travel sector. We’re incredibly excited to work together on the transition to greener travel, and we are immensely thankful to Sir Michael Gooley CBE and the wider team at Trailfinders for believing in our vision.”

This funding round positions CNF to become a global leader in synthetic fuel innovation, driving positive environmental impact on a global scale.

The ASAP-DAC consortium comprises io consulting (energy) UK LLP (“io”) acting as engineering partner, and Mission Zero Technologies Ltd acting as Direct Air Capture partner, and is part-funded by the UK Department for Transport’s Advanced Fuels Fund.
